RF Microneedling vs Regular Microneedling: Which Do You Need?

This collagen treatment has become one of the most searched skin treatments of the last few years, and with that popularity comes a common question: should you book regular microneedling or RF microneedling? They sound almost identical and use the same basic technique, but they are built for different goals. This guide explains the difference between traditional microneedling and RF microneedling, which skin concerns each one suits, and how to decide.

What Is Traditional Microneedling?

Traditional microneedling uses fine needles, a technique also called collagen induction therapy, to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. The skin responds by repairing itself, and that repair process triggers collagen production along with new elastin. Over the following weeks, this rejuvenation softens acne scarring, refines skin texture, makes pores look smaller and smooths fine lines.

Standard microneedling is the go-to treatment for uneven texture and post-acne marks, with little downtime: most people look flushed for a day or two and carry on as normal.

What Is RF Microneedling?

RF microneedling is a combination of microneedling and RF. The same needles create micro-channels, and the device delivers radiofrequency energy through them as gentle heat energy into the deeper layers of the skin. RF microneedling reaches deeper than needles alone and adds a second trigger for collagen and elastin remodeling, which is why its main benefit is skin tightening and lifting as well as resurfacing.

In short: RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy to everything regular microneedling already does.

RF Microneedling vs Microneedling: The Key Differences

Traditional microneedling RF microneedling
How it works Needles only Needles plus radiofrequency energy delivered deeper into the skin
Main goal Acne scarring, texture, pores Skin tightening, firmness, lifting, plus texture
Depth of effect Upper layers of the skin Deeper tissue
Downtime Flushed for a day or two Redness and mild swelling for a day or two
Price at our studio $349, or $849 for three $399, or $899 for three

Which Treatment Is Better for Acne Scars, Wrinkles or Skin Tightening?

  • Acne scars and uneven texture: traditional microneedling is usually the better starting point. It works on texture directly and costs less per session.
  • Skin laxity and loss of firmness: RF microneedling is the step up. The added RF energy targets firmness and lifting more directly than needles alone.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles: both help. Early fine lines respond well to regular microneedling; if wrinkles come with some looseness, RF microneedling may do more.
  • Texture and firmness together: RF microneedling covers both, which makes it a good choice for a wide range of skin concerns at once.

Neither treatment is suited to active breakouts. If you have more than mild to moderate acne across the area to be treated, settle that first with an acne treatment.

Will Microneedling Help Sagging Jowls?

For early, mild skin laxity along the jawline, RF microneedling can help firm the skin over a series of sessions. Significant sagging is a different matter: no needling treatment replaces surgery, and an honest consultation should tell you that before you book.

How Do Recovery Time and Side Effects Compare?

Both treatments have minimal downtime. Straight after a session, skin looks flushed, a bit like a mild sunburn, and RF microneedling can add some mild swelling. Redness generally settles within a day or two. Skip makeup for 24 hours and avoid saunas, hot yoga and heavy exercise for 48 hours. Our aftercare guide covers the details.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

With both treatments, results build gradually. Texture and glow often improve within the first couple of weeks, but the skin’s response continues for roughly one to three months, so the fuller result appears well after the appointment. RF microneedling stimulates collagen at a deeper level, and the tightening effect tends to keep developing over that same period.

Our guide to microneedling before and after results walks through the week-by-week timeline in more detail.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Three sessions spaced a few weeks apart is the usual starting course for either treatment. Each session builds on the last, which is how both treatments deliver longer-lasting results. Deeper scarring or more noticeable laxity may need more, and you will be told honestly at your skin analysis.

RF Microneedling Safety: Is It Right for All Skin Types?

Both treatments suit most skin types and a broad range of skin tones, because neither one targets pigment the way some lasers do. Settings are adjusted to your skin at every session. Wait if your skin is sunburned, irritated or infected in the area, and if you are pregnant, wait until after your pregnancy. Tell us before you book if you have a pacemaker or metal implants near the treatment area, since radiofrequency may not be suitable. Our pre-care instructions cover what to pause beforehand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RF microneedling better than microneedling?

Combining microneedling and radiofrequency is not better, just aimed at a different goal. For texture and post-acne marks, traditional microneedling is usually the right start. For firmness and lifting, RF microneedling is the stronger choice.

Is RF microneedling worth the extra cost?

If firmness is your main concern, yes; the $50 difference per session buys a firming effect that regular microneedling does not give. If your concern is mainly texture, the standard treatment alone is often enough.

Does RF microneedling hurt more?

Most clients find both very manageable. Comfort is discussed before treatment begins, and the intensity is adjusted to you.

Can I combine either treatment with others?

Yes, with sensible spacing. Many clients alternate sessions with gentler treatments like a HydraFacial for maintenance in between.
